Accessibility
We want everyone to be able to read our articles and use our tools. Here is what we do, what we know is still hard, and how to tell us about a problem.
Our goal
We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA across the site, in both light and dark mode.
What we do
- Every page can be used with a keyboard, starts with a “Skip to content” link and keeps a visible focus outline.
- Text and controls are checked for colour contrast in light and dark mode, and colour is never the only way information is shown.
- Tool results are announced to screen readers when they change.
- Animations play once or respect your device's reduced-motion setting.
- Pages work from phone width up, and text can be zoomed.
- We write in plain language and explain medical terms.
- We test new pages with the axe-core accessibility checker at phone and desktop widths.
Known limits
- Some of the official websites we link to are run by other organizations, and we can't control how accessible they are.
- The breathing exercise is timed. Each step is also shown and announced as text, and you can stop it at any time.
Tell us about a barrier
If something on this site is hard or impossible for you to use, please email [email protected] with the page address and what went wrong. We'll reply, aim to fix it, and in the meantime give you the information another way. We aim to reply within five business days.
